Job Description

Intelligent Infrastructure Systems (IIS), LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pennoni Associates Inc., located in Philadelphia, is dedicated to assisting bridge owners develop strategies for indefinite preservation and achieving optimal asset life cycle cost.

We are seeking an Associate Bridge Engineer I,a qualified candidate to join our Philadelphia office.  The successful candidate will work with a team of experts in performing refined load ratings using finite element analysis and in many cases structural load testing with structural monitoring according to the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation.  Projects will also include design and implementation of structural health monitoring systems and the collection and analysis of bridge data on a short and long-term basis.

The work will be performed on various small and large bridge projects across the country. We expect work involving both highway and rail bridges, including major long-span bridges, moveable bridges and other constructed infrastructures.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:


  • Participate in project teams in the performance of structural condition evaluation, load capacity rating, design of operations, preservation and retrofit of various transportation structures such as highway and railway bridges, overhead sign structures and others.
  • Develop finite element models for structural identification and scenario analyses of existing or new structures to evaluate their performance.
  • Develop structural designs based on the findings of analyses and requirements for inclusion in a PS&E package.
  • Present data in graphical formats.
  • Prepare reports with actionable conclusions and recommendations for infrastructure owners.
  • Provide expertise and support to other transportation design teams throughout Pennoni on as needed basis.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:


  • Master’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is required.
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer License within 2 years required.
  • 0 - 3 years of progressive structural bridge engineering experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Project and/or task management experience is desired.
  • Bridge design, structural analysis and load rating experience desirable.
  • Ability to complete the 80-hr NBIS Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course (NHI 130055) and/or PennDOT Basic Bridge Safety Inspection Certification (CBSI).
  • Knowledge of drafting software packages – MicroStation / ProjectWise and/or AutoCAD Civil3D required.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of finite element analysis and modeling.
  • Knowledge of a number of software packages is desirable (i.e. LARSA, CSiBridge, STAAD, SAP, AASHTOWare, as well as MATLAB and Mathcad).


May occasionally require working outdoors in various geographic regions and in wide variety of weather conditions and facilities. May be required to climb structures after receiving mandatory safety training to include but not limited to OSHA 10 Hour Road Construction, fall protection and confined space training. Must be capable of lifting and carrying weights up to 50 lbs.
