Pennoni, located in Philadelphia, is dedicated to assisting bridge owners develop strategies for indefinite preservation and achieving optimal life cycle cost for their assets.

We are seeking a qualified Associate Bridge Engineer I to join our Philadelphia office. The successful candidate will work with a team of experts in performing refined load ratings of bridges using finite element analysis and in many cases structural load testing with structural monitoring according to the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation.  Projects will also include design, implementation and commissioning of structural health monitoring systems and the collection and analysis of bridge data on a short and long-term basis.

The work will include the investigation of various small and large complex highway and rail bridge projects across the country including major long-span bridges and moveable bridges. Investigation of building structures and other constructed infrastructures such as sign structures and light poles and fixtures is expected

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Develop finite element models for structural identification and scenario analyses of existing or new structures to evaluate their performance.
  • Develop final structural monitoring system plans, specifications, and estimates
  • Prepare reports with actionable conclusions and recommendations for infrastructure owners.
  • Provide expertise and support to other transportation design teams throughout Pennoni on as needed basis.
  • Develop software for the analysis and visualization of bridge performance data and automation of structural data processing.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is required.
  • EIT certification required.
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer License within 2 years required.
  • 0 - 7 years of progressive structural bridge engineering experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Bridge design, structural analysis and load rating experience desirable.
  • Knowledge of drafting software packages – MicroStation and/or AutoCAD Civil3D required.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of finite element analysis and modeling.
  • Knowledge of a number of software packages is desirable (i.e. LARSA, CSiBridge, STAAD, SAP, AASHTOWare, as well as MATLAB, Mathcad, and Python).


May occasionally require working outdoors in various geographic regions and in wide variety of weather conditions and facilities. May be required to climb structures after receiving mandatory safety training to include but not limited to OSHA 10 Hour Road Construction, fall protection and confined space training. Must be capable of lifting and carrying weights up to 50 lbs.
